On behalf of Dr. Roger Glass, Director of the Fogarty International Center, please join us from 9:00 am-12:15 pm at the Natcher Conference Center (Building 45) on the NIH campus on June 11, 2007, when the FIC will host a one-year anniversary meeting "The Disease Control Priorities Project: Implementing the Research Agenda. The purpose of this meeting is to review the key messages of the DCPP and highlight its impact on health policy and programs in developing countries.
One year ago, the DCPP released two landmark publications: (1) the second edition of Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries (DCP2) and (2) Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors. The goal of this 4-year effort was to provide an evidence-based analysis and resource materials to inform health policymaking in developing countries. DCPP was funded primarily through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and was a joint project of the Fogarty International Center and the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization. The Population Reference Bureau coordinated the dissemination of project findings and publications.
The first edition of Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries (DCP1) led to major advances in the health care system of many countries, including Mexico. The Mexican experience will be reviewed by the former Minister of Health, Dr. Julio Frenk. The second edition has already made an impact in several countries, and these experiences will be highlighted during the meeting. The DCPP website (www.dcp2.org) has become an information resource for the world and received more than half a million visitors from over 100 countries since its launch last year.
While our budget precludes the possibility of NIH supporting the cost of travel and accommodation, we do hope that you will join us for what promises to be an exciting discussion and celebration of the fact that books can indeed save lives!
Visitor information about the NIH, including links to a map of the NIH campus, and security measures in effect that you should allow extra time for upon entering the campus, can be found at: http://www.nih.gov/about/visitor/index.htm.
