Come take advantage of the opportunity to meet and talk with representatives from 104 finalist projects for 42 countries at the 2007 Global Development Marketplace, May 22-23. These finalists, vying for $4 million in grants, bring to Washington new and creative ways of tackling some of today's seemingly intractable health problems faced by the poor in developing countries. Paired with the World Bank's Health, Nutrition and Population unit, this year's competition attracted a record high of nearly 2,900 applicants. The 104 finalists were narrowed down through two rounds of rigorous assessment involving more than 200 health and development experts from inside and outside the Bank. Two-thirds of the finalist organizations are non-governmental organizations, while a quarter of them are private businesses and academic institutions. Africa is the most represented continent with 36 projects, while countries like India, Kenya and Philippines have the most number of proposed projects. Visiting the Marketplace will expose you to the breadth of finalists' ideas, which tackle numerous health problems from combating the spread of malaria through innovative ways of reducing mosquito populations to introducing high-technologies in remote, rural areas for use in life-threatening medical situations. You will also have the chance to vote for your favorite project to win the People's Choice Award. The Marketplace is open to the general public.
