Disease Control Priorities Highlighted Around the World
The Disease Control Priorities Project (DCPP) is an ongoing effort to assess disease control priorities and produce evidence-based analysis and resource materials to inform health policymaking in developing countries. Since DCPP’s launch in April 2006, DCPP partners have continued to disseminate the “best health buys” message of Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries, 2nd edition (DCP2), at a variety of events worldwide.
August 2006 events:
• Two presentations in Brazil—one at the Brazilian Collective Health Association in conjunction with a meeting of the World Congress of Public Health in Rio de Janeiro, and another at the Maternal & Child Institute of Pernambuco in Recife—by DCPP editor Philip Musgrove.
• A strategy discussion based on the DCPP contraception chapter at USAID in Washington, D.C., led by DCPP authors Ruth Levine, Gaverick Methany, Rachel Nugent, and co-managing editor Anthony Measham.
September 2006 events:
• Presentation at the 6th International Conference on Priorities in Health Care in Toronto by DCPP editor Prabhat Jha.
• DCPP session at the PAHO Meeting of Health Ministers in Washington, D.C., by DCPP editors George Alleyne and Philip Musgrove.
• Briefing at the Makerere University Institute of Public Health in Kampala, Uganda by DCPP author Ramanan Laxminarayan.
October 2006 events:
• Session on DCPP chaired by DCPP editor George Alleyne at a conference in Mexico City, Evidence for Health System Reform: Global Lessons Based on National Experiences.
• Policy seminar at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine convened by DCPP editor Anne Mills.
• Presentation on cost-effectiveness at the 6th Annual USAID Global Health Mini University in Washington, D.C., by Communicating Health Priorities project director Fariyal Fikree and DCPP author Ramanan Laxminarayan.
• Plenary session at the Global Forum for Health Research in Cairo by DCPP senior editor Dean Jamison and Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors editor Colin Mathers.
November 2006 events:
• Launch of the DCP2 mental health cluster book in Geneva, with DCPP editors David Evans, Dean Jamison, and George Alleyne.
• Sessions on DCPP main messages and cost-effectiveness methodology at a World Bank Institute course on health sector reform and financing in late October to mid November in Washington, D.C. A similar two-week course was held specifically for a Chinese audience (conducted in Mandarin) in late November and early December in Washington, D.C.
• Presentations at the World Bank Human Development Learning Week in Washington, D.C. by DCPP co-managing editor Joel Breman and DCPP editors Mariam Claeson and Philip Musgrove.
• Plenary session on DCPP main messages and cost-effectiveness by DCPP editor Philip Musgrove and a presentation on community nutrition by DCPP author John Mason at a meeting on community health in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Conducted by the World Bank in collaboration with WHO/AFRO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, and several Ministries of Health.
• Presentation by DCPP editor Philip Musgrove for state government officials in India including the Secretary and other senior officials from Uttar Pradesh and Uttar Anchal State, to inform policy for the upcoming State Health Systems Project II. (World Bank)
• Presentation on malaria via video conference by DCPP co-managing editor Joel Breman for senior government officials and counterparts from WHO and partner organizations in India to inform policy for the upcoming Vector Borne Disease Control Program. (World Bank)
January 2007 events:
• Consultative meeting in Delhi for the DCPP India report (to be launched April 2007) included DCPP editors and authors Prabhat Jha, Dean Jamison, George Alleyne, and Ramanan Laxminarayan.
DCPP is a collaborative effort of the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and the Population Reference Bureau, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
New Feature Stories
The Disease Control Priorities Project continues to commission seasoned science and health writers to highlight real-world examples of the global burden of disease, cost-effective interventions, policies, and programs. New Fact Sheets
Fact sheets present brief summaries about the broad range of diseases, conditions, or issues addressed by the Disease Control Priorities Project. Since the last newsletter, the following fact sheets have been added to www.dcp2.org:

Book Distribution and Web Traffic
Through August 2006, over 16,000 copies of Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries, second edition; The Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors; and Priorities in Health have been distributed around the world. This number includes sales figures combined with free dissemination. In addition, the content from all three volumes is available for download here at no cost.
Since the initial launch in April 2006, web traffic at www.dcp2.org has increased substantially, approaching nearly 60,000 sessions in December 2006. This represents an 18 percent monthly increase in sessions since July 2006. On average, the site is accessed from more than 100 countries and approximately 10,000 files are downloaded every month.
Partners' Council
The Disease Control Priorities Project (DCPP) Partners’ Council provides a means to catalyze action on DCPP main messages in developing countries and serves as a forum to facilitate dissemination activities. Members include representatives from the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the Population Reference Bureau, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Partners’ Council held a teleconference on Dec. 8, 2006, to discuss on-going DCPP activities by each partner.
WHO has published a DCPP mental health cluster book that was launched in November 2006. Additionally, WHO is participating in DCPP-related policy and program development in India with other DCPP authors and editors.
The World Bank Institute has initiated dissemination activities in several countries and regions based on interest from World Bank field offices. They have presented DCPP findings and methodologies at several conferences, courses, and seminars in Washington D.C., Ethiopia, and India for a variety of audiences. Currently, they have plans for additional seminars in China and Pakistan.
The Fogarty International Center continues to disseminate DCPP best buys. Dr. Roger Glass, Fogarty’s director, distributes the DCPP publications to many of his visitors, including ministers of health and other senior government officials from developing countries. Dr. Joel Breman, Senior Scientific Advisor, has presented DCPP overviews as well as the evidence on malaria to a number of audiences.
The Population Reference Bureau has been involved in a number of dissemination activities, including events in Washington D.C., East Africa, India, Brazil, and Egypt. These events were held in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization; the East, Central, Southern African Health Community; the Global Forum for Health Research; national governments; and a number of universities.

Enhancements to www.dcp2.org
Explore new enhancements to www.dcp2.org to be launched in February 2007:
New site navigation
- The top of page navigation bar has been reorganized and expanded with new pages for easier navigation. As you roll your cursor over each label, a drop-down menu reveals a menu of choices.
New and improved tools and resources
- Explore a new slide library based on graphics from various DCP2 chapters.
- Create a custom, downloadable PowerPoint presentation from a selection of slides. This feature is similar to our popular Custom Books.
- Download Express PowerPoint presentations created by the editors based on the chapters of the main publications.
- Add chapters to your Custom Book right from the chapter abstract page, or check out the chapter abstracts while you are creating a custom book.
- Submit your comments to the site through a link from the Expert Essays page.
- Improved RSS subscription page. More refined search results
- Your search results will take you directly to the sections within each chapter that are relevant to your search request. Items within your search will also be highlighted within the text making them easier to locate.
Quick Browse upgraded to Quick Find
- You can select two criteria at once to hone in on the information you are looking for faster. For example, select a Topic and Region, or a Disease/Condition and Country together.
My DCPP site registration
- You can create and save custom books and presentations built within the MYDCPP area. This custom area, built for you, lets you log in with a username and password. Once you are logged in, you can more easily create a custom book or presentation and access these items from any computer. In addition, MYDCPP allows you to manage your subscriptions to RSS feeds and newsletters.
New Translations page - Find translations of the three main publications more easily with our improved system.

…Subscribing to DCPP's Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed is easy! When you subscribe to the feed, each time news, events, or features are published to the site, a link to that item is added to your reader. To learn more, click here.
…Announce your global health conferences and seminars to DCPP visitors and RSS subscribers on the DCPP events page. Submit your event information through a simple online form. Visit the DCPP Events page and link to the form in the “Submit an Event” box in the top right corner.
…DCPP is collecting “Snapshot” examples of how DCP2 is having an impact on health policies and programs around the world. Look for three “Snapshots,” including one by India’s former Health Secretary, Rajiv Misra, to be published in February with more to follow.
