Disease Control Priorities Highlighted Around The World
The Disease Control Priorities Project (DCPP) is an ongoing effort to assess disease control priorities and produce evidence-based analysis and resource materials to inform health policymaking in developing countries. Since DCPP’s launch in April 2006, DCPP partners have continued to disseminate the “best health buys” message of Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries, 2nd edition (DCP2), at a variety of events worldwide.
May 2007 Events:
Main messages from DCP2 were presented at the World Bank’s Senegal Francophone Public Private Partnership Course from May 7-11, 2007. Approximately 70 participants attended.
On May 12, 2007, the World Bank held an event in Tunisia on improving the quality of care. Analysis, findings, and recommendations from DCP2 were presented to decisionmakers from the Ministry of Health.
DCPP had a booth at the World Bank Development Marketplace in Washington, DC from May 22-23, 2007.
DCP2 author, Christian Lengeler, presented on Conquering Malaria on May 31, 2007 in Washington, DC at the World Bank’s first seminar in a series on Achieving Results for Healthy Development: Applying Main Findings of DCP2.
The World Bank disseminated DCP2 main messages at the Burkina Faso Francophone Public Private Partnership Course from May 28-June 1, 2007 with attendance from approximately 70 participants.
June 2007 Events:
DCP2 authors, Haile Debas and Colin McCord, and DCP2 senior editor, Dean Jamison, participated in the recent Bellagio Conference in Italy on Increasing Access to Surgical Services in Resource-Constrained Settings in Sub-Sahara Africa from June 4-8, 2007.
On June 7, 2007, the World Bank held its second seminar in its series on Achieving Results for Healthy Development: Applying Main Findings of DCP2. This seminar focused on the Cost-effectiveness of Interventions for Mental Disorders with a presentation by DCP2 author Harvey Whiteford.
On June 11, 2007, the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health hosted the First-year Anniversary Event for DCPP: Implementing the Research Agenda. The purpose of this meeting was to review the main messages of the DCPP and highlight its impact on health policy and programs in developing countries. Several DCP2 editors and authors presented on key DCP2 themes and early impacts.
The Population Reference Bureau and the West African Health Organization collaborated on the High Level Consultative Meeting on Sub-Regional Strategy for the Reduction of Maternal and Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity in Accra, Ghana on June 20-22, 2007. DCPP staff presented on key DCP2 findings, including topics such as burden of disease and cost-effectiveness analysis in the context of reproductive health (maternal, newborn, and family planning).
July 2007 Events:
On July 12, 2007, DCP2 authors, Gaverick Matheny and Khama Rogo, and Sadia Chowdhury, senior public health specialist, spoke at the World Bank seminar on Contraception, Family Planning, and Reproductive Health: Lessons from DCP2 and Bank Operations. This was the third in the series on Achieving Results for Healthy Development: Applying Main Findings of DCP2.
DCPP sincerely regrets the passing of Dr. Stephen E. Straus, expert from the US National Institutes of Health’s National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and DCPP author. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Dr. Straus’s family and friends.
