DCPP is the Backbone of a New Global Health Textbook

September 6, 2007

Essentials of Global HealthJones and Bartlett Publishers has released a new global health text book, Essentials of Global Health, that heavily cites both Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors (GBD) and Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries, 2nd edition (DCP2). The book is an introductory level textbook and is designed for a one-semester, under-graduate global health course. It illustrates key themes with an extensive set of case studies, examples, and the latest evidence.

Richard Skolnik, author of the volume and Director of International Programs at Population Reference Bureau (PRB), remarked that, “GBD provided a consistent set of data that underpinned all of the book, and DCP2 offered information that helped me focus on highlighting the most cost-effective approaches in dealing with the health problems of the poor in low-income countries.”

Prior to joining PRB, Richard Skolnik served as the executive director of the Harvard School of Public Health PEPFAR AIDS treatment program in Botswana, Nigeria, and Tanzania. From 2001 to late 2004, he was the director of the George Washington University's Center for Global Health, and between 1976 and 2001, he was with the World Bank, last serving as the director for health and education for the South Asia Region.
