Disease Control Priorities Highlighted Around The World
Findings from the Diseases Control Priorities Project continue to be highlighted and presented at health policy events around the world. Below is a list of notable events where the World Bank or other DCPP partners disseminated the DCPP findings:
In October 2007 in Moscow at "Meeting the Challenge of Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries in the Commonwealth of Independent States," DCPP findings were used to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing interventions for noncommunicable diseases and injuries in the region. Senior governmental authorities were in attendance and presenters emphasized the importance of addressing noncommunicable diseases and injuries to improve social and economic development. A follow up meeting occurred in May 2008 and a series of follow up meetings in selected Oblasts (regions) are currently taking place. At the Third Annual African Sciences Academies Development Initiative Conference in Dakar, Senegal (November 2007), DCPP was used to provide background on using cost-effectiveness for priority setting. Many regional policy makers and key decision makers were in attendance.
In February 2008, at the 46th East, Central, and Southern African Health Ministers’ Conference in Victoria, Seychelles, Dr. Fariyal Fikree presented "Disease Prevention and Control: An Evidence Based Strategy for Health Policy and Programs," based on findings from DCPP. Several Ministers of Health, permanent health secretaries, and key decision makers were in attendance. The presentation can be viewed here.
A workshop in Juba, Sudan in June 2008 served to disseminate lessons and conclusions from DCPP to policy makers, World Bank staff, and development partners. The prevailing health issues facing the region were discussed in an intensive in-depth training session. In addition to providing a basic background on the cost-effectiveness methodology used in DCPP, the workshop also focused on reviewing recent trends, studies and methodologies identified within DCPP, with the ultimate goal of preparing policy makers and those that influence policy makers with the tools and knowledge necessary to prioritize health interventions in an effective manner.
In Monrovia, Liberia in July 2008, a workshop focused on three core topics related to evidence-based interventions and policies: 1) overview of basic principles; 2) setting priorities; 3) strengthening the underlying health system to support such an approach.
