Europe and Central Asia

About 475 million people live in ECA, a development region where every country is experiencing economic growth. However, since 1990, poverty rates in ECA have increased; unless economic growth is accelerated or redistributed, improvement is uncertain.

Progress in education has been mixed: enrollment of males and females in primary and secondary schools is nearly equal; although the primary school completion rate is high, progress toward 100% has been slow. Although rates for child mortality and child malnutrition are low, further reductions have been slow. HIV/AIDS is also a critical issue in ECA, which has the world’s fastest growing prevalence rate.
